ABOUT MARIA BARNAS
Maria Barnas (Hoorn, 1973) is a Dutch poet and visual artist whose work explores the transformative power and limitations of language. Blending poetry, performance, visual art, and reflective writing, she creates an interdisciplinary practice where language becomes a space for personal and political inquiry.
What is the weight of a word? Who is allowed to speak? How is meaning made?
Barnas’s works often revolve around moments of doubt, silence and hesitation. Diamond without R (2022) deepens this exploration through the figure of a Polish grandmother and the experience of being cut off from the mother's mother tongue, where absence emerges as a formidable, almost corporeal, presence.
Barnas is editor of De Gids and writes about poetry for NRC Handelsblad. Her work has been shown in institutions including the Kröller-Müller Museum. A member of the Akademie van Kunsten, she has received several literary awards, including the C. Buddingh’ Prize, the J.C. Bloem Prize, and the Anna Bijns Prize.
Her most recent poetry collection is Night Boat & other poems (Shearsman Books, 2025) translated by Donald Gardner.
